If the Party of Socialists (PSRM) does not obtain a parliamentary majority in the elections of February 24, 2019, early elections will most probably be held in the second half of 2019, President Igor Dodon stated in a conference where he summed up his two years in office, IPN reports.

President Dodon considers the PSRM is the only party that can obtain a parliamentary majority independently as the party, according to polls, is supported by over 45% of the determined voters. He anticipates that three political forces will be represented in the next Parliament: the PSRM, the Democratic Party and the bloc of the right, namely in such an order.

“The year 2019 will be difficult. Three election campaigns have been already planned: for the parliamentary elections, for the local general elections and for the election of the Bashkan of Gagauzia on May 19. If we do not have a parliamentary majority after February 24, we will also have early elections in the second half of 2019,” stated the President.

Referring to eventual coalitions in Parliament, Igor Dodon noted he does not believe that the Socialists will form a coalition with someone as they do not have with whom. As to his participation in the election campaign, he said he will provide an answer during January 20-24, 2019.

In another development, speaking about the involvement of the church in elections, President Dodon stated he does not believe the church became involved in the campaign prior to the presidential elections of 2016. He noted that each citizen can express their views publicly or not as Moldova is a democratic country.

Asked if he considers he managed to become the President of everyone in two years, Igor Dodon said he became the President of all those who agree to keep the country’s statehood and neutrality, are for balanced foreign policy and friendship relations with Russia and those who plead for the traditional values. These criteria are supported by over 80% of the citizens of Moldova.
