President Igor Dodon said he wil not sign the decree to name Eugen Sturza minister of defense regardless of the Constitutional Court’s decision. He made such an announcement in a press briefing that was held after the CC passed its judgment, ruling that the President of the Republic of Moldova has the right to check the compatibility of the candidate proposed by the Prime Minister for a post, but does not have the right of veto on the Premier’s proposal. The President’s refusal to fulfill his constitutional obligation to name the candidate proposed again by the Premier is a serious violation of the constitutional obligations, IPN reports.
According to Igor Dodon, now that the CC pronounced its decision the decree to name Eugen Sturza will be probably signed by Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu. If this happens, he will not recognize Eugen Sturza as minister of defense and will not include him in the Superior Council of Magistracy.
President Dodon said the CC can interpret the Constitution, but cannot institute new constitutional norms. “You will answer for this. Your acts will be examined separately after the next parliamentary elections. It is a flagrant violation when one political party, the PDM, which controls Parliament, interprets the Constitution,” added Igor Dodon.
He noted that what happened today shows once again that early elections need to be held and that a presidential system of government should be instituted. He asked for the people’s support in this regard.
