The ex-President of Moldova Igor Dodon was elected president of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), the outgoing president of the party Zinaida Grechanyi announced after the 16th ordinary congress of the PSRM, IPN reports.
According to Zinaida Grechanyi, it is the common decision of the party’s administration to unanimously adopt the proposal for Igor Dodon to be the new president of the PSRM. She noted they witnessed no surprises as things inside the PSRM are well-organized.
The president-elect of the PSRM Igor Dodon said that nine years ago in December, he was named leader of the PSRM, which was an incipient party. Since 2011, he has made effort and managed to transform a party without parliamentary prospects into the most powerful party in the country. The next important decisions in Moldova cannot be taken without the PSRM’s participation.
The newly elected president noted the objectives for the next year include the strengthening of the PSRM’s position at the central and local levels, preparation for and winning of the snap parliamentary elections. The PSRM will not form alliances. It is for snap elections and calls on the President to initiate the legal procedures for inducing these elections.
Igor Dodon held office of President of the Republic of Moldova during December 23, 2016 – December 24, 2020. He served as an MP in 2009, while managing the PSRM. He also served as first deputy prime minister of Moldova since 2008 until 2009 and minister of economy and trade since 2006 until 2009.
