The European integration of Moldova must become a project that does not have an alternative, while the country’s people must be convinced that this is the correct path, Head of Parliament Igor Corman said in the second Forum of Debates on the European Integration of Moldova, staged by the Foreign Policy Association and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, IPN reports.

Igor Corman said that 2014 is a very important year for Moldova’s European course. This year the country obtained a liberalized visa regime and signed the Association Agreement with the EU. “The question is if the majority of people in Moldova realize this progress. For many of them this thing is abstract. Few people read the EU reports on the made assessments,” he stated. According to the politician, for many citizens it is important to see the accomplishments and the real changes in the country, especially those that refer to their life.

The Speaker also said that there are political forces in Moldova that plead for the replacement of Moldova’s European course. “They play with the people’s feelings and try to profit from the regional situation and to exploit this dissatisfaction that results from the imposition of penalties by Russia. They also try to divide society by involving the ethnic minorities,” he stated.

Igor Corman added that in the electoral period every pro-European party must make effort to convince the people to vote for them and to motivate them to support the European integration project after the elections.

The Forum of Debates on the European Integration of Moldova centers on the first results achieved following Moldova’s association with the EU and the challenges that Chisinau will have to cope with on the path to European integration, including corruption fighting and the steps that need to be taken to reform the justice sector.
