Both society and the political class are responsible for what is going on in Moldova now. The population made a choice in favor of modernization, but the political class that signed a European integration document, which contains an agenda with priorities and a plan of action, got stuck owing to the personal interests, IPN project’s permanent expert Igor Botan, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), said in the public debate “Why do the crises in Moldova affect the European integration? View of the participants in the General Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum in Kiev. The Assembly’s Resolution on Moldova”, which was held by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova.

Igor Botan, who was invited to take part in the General Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum in Kiev, said the current politicians know what they have to do, but they have personal interests that are the source of all evils and society bears the blame for tolerating these abuses by the elites that rob the people. We have what we need, but cannot move things on for the reason that these interests of the politicians are deep-rooted in the seats they hold.

The project’s expert pointed to the attitude of society and the foreign partners to the political class, which were rather indulgent and tolerated many things. Ultimately, that large-scale theft was committed in the banking sector and everybody now speak about it. Everything that was based on the confidence in the rulers turned out to be a fatal mistake. We are wrong if we think that the European partners do not know about the problems faced by Moldova and this will become evident when the EU reviews its approach and this will be differentiated, given that the resources for the Eastern Partnership countries become smaller.

Igor Botan said the partners can support us only if we have a responsible political class and active society that would monitor this class. Everything depends on society, which can change things by becoming involved, and this should emanate shock waves towards the politicians.

The public debate “Why do the crises in Moldova affect the European integration? View of the participants in the General Assembly of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum in Kiev. The Assembly’s Resolution on Moldova” is the 46th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates”, which are supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
