The Moldovans expect the EU to make available not only financial support to Moldova, but also communal rules that would enable to develop businesses, IPN project’s standing expert Igor Boțan stated in a public debate titled “Resetting of relations with the EU: motives, chances, guarantees” that was organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

“Everyone expects the European Union to provide not only financial support, but also rules that would allow the private businesses all over the world to come with investments so that the Republic of Moldova has value added on what it produces,” said Igor Boțan.

According to the expert, the EU turned out to be a reliable partner of Moldova. “Since 1998, when the cooperation agreement took effect, the EU has showed that it is a trustworthy partner that supported the Republic of Moldova without exceptions. When things in the Republic of Moldova went wrong, we saw an appropriate reaction on the part of the EU,” he noted.

The expert considers the government coalition’s good intentions in relation to the EU are guaranteed by the fear not to repeat the fate of the previous parties that launched the integration into the EU and failed on the way. “The parties that ruled, the four parties that set off on the path of European integration, are in a difficult situation. Some of their leaders are in an unenviable situation. One leader is in jail, another one fled the country. I think the fear of the revenge of those who were in power can be a kind of guarantee,” stated Igor Boțan.

He noted the people should want Moldova to return to normality and to develop. The political parties should enter a competition, should develop and ensure a normal development climate.

The public debate held by IPN on July 23 was attended by Socialist MP
Gaik Vartanean, ACUM Bloc MP Dumitru Alaiba, vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova Iulian David and the IPN debates’ standing expert Igor Boțan. The European People’s Party of Moldova didn’t accept the invitation.

The public debate “Resetting of relations with the EU: motives, chances, guarantees” is the 114th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through public debates” that are held with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
