If presidential elections were held next Sunday, 35% of the Moldovans would vote for incumbent President Igor Dodon, 20% for PAS leader Maia Sandu, while 8% for Democratic leader Pavel Filip, shows a survey presented by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova in a news conference. According to the poll, 69% of those surveyed are sure they will go to vote, IPN reports.

The Association’s president Victor Mocanu said the presidential elections could be less attractive as the persons named by the respondents ran four years ago. It would be preferable to have new contenders in the race.

The survey says that if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 44% of the respondents decided to vote would give their vote to the Party of Socialists, 21% to the Action and Solidarity Party, 10% to the Democratic Party and slightly over 6% to the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform”. Some 60% of those surveyed would definitely vote.

Only 17% of the respondents are for holding snap parliamentary elections this year. 70% are against, while 13% didn’t form an opinion about this.

In general, the population, from among political and social institutions, trusts most the church, which is followed by the President and the local mayor’s office. Victor Mocanu said the population trusts least the justice system, the political parties and employers and this is worrisome given the upcoming presidential elections. “The justice sector plays an essential role in the quality of the electoral process,” he stated.

The poll was carried out during January 2-13, 2020 and covered a sample of 1,189 adult people from 83 localities of the Republic of Moldova, except for the Transnistrian region. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.0%.

The Association’s representatives said the poll was carried out on the initiative of the Association, with its own funds.
