If none of the three camps – the PDM, PSRM or the pro-European opposition – obtains a majority of votes in the February 24, 2019 elections, the citizens should most probably expect early parliamentary elections. No one will risk having negotiations with the Democrats, politologist Igor Volnitski was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel.
The politologist noted the pressure exerted from outside the country could influence the formation of a coalition. “In this case, the self-conservation, self-defense instinct of some of the parties will play a role as everyone knows what an alliance with the Democratic Party means. The PDM does not have an alliance with someone for a long period. It devours each ally and everyone understands this,” stated Igor Volnitski.
He said the eventual early elections are not in the interests of the ruling party because its positons will be seriously shaken in such a case.
Politologist Ernest Vardanean said the scenarios related to the future elections should be divided into two: the first - before the elections and on the election day and the second - after the parliamentary elections. Actions to invalidate the elections and blackmailing could be witnessed after the elections. Therefore, the creation of a coalition of the right under the pressure of the Western partners is not possible because these are disappointed themselves in the PDM.
“There is a high probability that early parliamentary elections will be held and the situation at those elections could be different. At the early elections, the West would openly bank on the camp of the right – Maia Sandu and Andrei Năstase - as it will be clear that the PDM no longer holds power and, de facto, lost it,” stated Enrnest Vardanean. According to him, there is a risk that the Socialists will suffer a serious blow to their image in the early elections and only then the West would attract the coalition of the right to power.
