Sixty-six years of the victory against fascism, the veterans remember the war with tears in their eyes. “I went through pain, cold and famine, but I thank God that I reached 92. You should not even try to imagine our sufferings during the war. I was afraid I will be shot and I will not return home,” war veteran Nicolae Marin stated for Info-Prim Neo. Nicolae Marin related that he saw dead people around and imagined himself among them. He had to be vigilant so as not to be killed. “When Romania and Russia joined to fight against the Fascists, I was sent to the front. In the battles in Bulgaria, I was injured to the leg. I had stayed in the hospital for ten days. The examination commission told me I can no more fight and sent me home. I came by military vehicles up to Romania. From the border, I walked up to Chisinau,” he said. Nicolae Marin wishes nobody knows what war is like. “You’d better endure famine than fight in a war. Whole cities and towns were destroyed. It was hard. It was like hell. There was blood everywhere. Faith in God helped me remain alive,” said the veteran. He also said that on May 9 he still feels that enormous joy experienced 66 years ago. “There is no other more important holiday for me than May 9. It is the day when peace was won and the bloodshed was brought to an end,” stated the old man. On May 9, it is 66 years of the victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
