MEP Siegfried Muresan voiced hope the new Head of State will not be an obstacle to the EU’s wish to help the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the MEP said Igor Dodon’s statements about the Association Agreement with the EU do not help the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. On the contrary, they do the people a disservice, IPN reports.

Siegfried Muresan said the Association Agreement is good for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. According to him, a real statesman will never raise the commitments made by his predecessors in the name of the country. “If you won the elections, you manage the country from where you found it,” he stated.

The MEP noted that the EU works based on rules. “We, in Europe, saw many ‘courageous’ populist politicians who came very confident to Brussels, trying to change the rules of the game. Each of them, regardless of the country from which they came, and there were such politicians who wanted to change the rules of the game from the EU member states too, they all failed because the EU works based on the rule of law and on rules, predictably, orderly. That’s why, if the new President of the Republic of Moldova wants to cast doubt on what was done until now, he makes a mistake,” said Siegfried Muresan.

He also said that the Association Agreement is good for the Republic of Moldova, but miracles cannot be worked overnight. The benefits will increase in number when this accord is progressively implemented and the commitments are fulfilled. “We, in the EU, two weeks ago decided to allocate an extra €100 million to Moldova, in addition to the €746 million allocated already for 2014-2020. Each year this assistance will grow. As to the Russian Federation, I know only that the Russian Federation annually fleeces the Moldovans for gas, obtaining US$400 million a year,” stated the MEP.

According to him, in such conditions the President is obliged to be correct in relation to the people and tell them the truth, while the truth is that much more advantages are enjoyed from the rapprochement with the European Union than from that with Russia.
