September 5 will be a turning point in Moldova's history, considers the Humanist Party (PUM) headed by Valeriu Pasat. “For the Humanist Party, the referendum represents not only an effective instrument of modern democracy, but also a component part of the ideology of the Christian humanists, who, on the basis of Article 2 of the Constitution of Moldova, will plead for allowing the Orthodox people to directly exercise the power in the state,” it is said in a statement issued by the party, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The PUM believes the MPs in 2000 staged a 'coup' and deprived the people of the right to elect the head of state.
The party voices hope that the date of the referendum to make the Basis of Orthodoxy a compulsory school subject will be set by the next Parliament. The civic initiative to teach religion in schools will be the strong point of the humanists in the election campaign for the future elections, the statement says.
The Central Election Commission registered the PUM as a participant in the campaign preceding the September 5 constitutional referendum.
