A Corn Festival was held in Moldova for the first time, in Porumbeni village of Criuleni district. The organizers prepared hominy weighing 550 kg with the intention of setting a new record. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said that by such an act the organizers aimed to promote the country’s traditions, IPN reports.
Vasile Bumacov underlined that the corn is a very important crop for the Moldovan economy and its cultivation will rise to a new stage now that the Phytotechnic Institute “Porumbeni” overcame its difficulties and started to propose corn hybrids.
Deputy head of Criuleni district Dionisie Uratu said that a series of companies in the district produce meat and sausages owing to the corn. There are also a number of mills.
Attending the event, Moldova’s First President Mircea Snegur said that he personally contributed to the opening of the Phytotechnic Institute “Porumbeni” 40 years ago. “Such research institutions must be supported and renovated for the country’s benefit,” he said, noting that the corn accounts for half of the production of grains and is a crop that will help the country to develop the cattle breeding sector.
At the festival, visitors from the country and abroad could see exhibitions of handicrafts and conservative agricultural machinery. Besides the giant hominy, the guests could also taste steak, roasted pork and corn.
The Corn Festival was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, the Phytotechnic Institute “Porumbeni”, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the Criuleni District Council.
