A man from Rezina district was sentenced to four years in jail for fatally striking a pedestrian and leavening the place of the accident last autumn. The police established that the man drove at night with the lights off, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the incident happened in Saharna Noua village on October 19, 2013. The man decided to drive to the neighboring village even if he knew that the car’s lights were out of order. Driving at night on a country road with the lights off, he didn’t see an inebriated man who was lying on the road and went over him.

The driver didn’t give first aid to the man and didn’t inform the police. The 22-year-old victim died as a result of the received injuries.

The driver aged 47 was also banned from driving units of transport for a period of four years. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
