Scientific researchers of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova sent a letter to the senior authorities whereby they express their concern about the legislative initiative that amends the status and role of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and its institutions. The researchers oppose the transfer of the research and innovation powers to a component of the executive, IPN reports.

According to researchers, the given bill implies risks, while the restructuring of the current administrative system for managing the Academy of Sciences is not a necessity. The autonomy and independence of the institution as the highest and most prestigious scientific body in Moldova should be strengthened first. Steps should be taken to prevent its dissolution and transformation into an ordinary organization.

The signatories warn that amid internal political fluctuations, the progress of academic scientific research could be ensured only by a commitment made by political parties. “The intention to offer the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research the power to manage science and to transfer the researchers of academic social-humanistic institutions under the subordination of this Ministry is detrimental to the Academy of Sciences,” says the letter.

The researchers ask to keep the current autonomy of the Academy. The letter was endorsed unanimously in the September 14 General Assembly of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences.

The bill to restructure the Academy of Sciences was approved by the Government on July 10, 2017. To take effect, it should be examined and adopted by Parliament.
