The Moldovan Association of Historians (AIRM) is concerned that the history curriculum in schools has become one of the subjects of negotiation between the Alliance for European Integration (AIE), and specifically its candidate for president, Democrat leader Marian Lupu, and the Party of Communists, the association said in a statement, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The statement came after the issue was discussed at a recent televised program featuring the Democrat honorary president, Dumitru Diacov, and Corina Fusu, the chairperson of the specialized parliamentary commission.
The historians observed that, while disagreeing on a number of issues, both speakers agreed that the problem of teaching history, devising curricula and textbooks, should present an exclusive concern for professional historians.
In this context, AIRM is urging the political forces to avoid, often inflammatory, discussions about the teaching of history and let specialized historians analyze the phenomenon in an inclusive manner and come up with proper scientific solutions.
The tenth item on a 12-point proposition made by Lupu in a bid to win Communist votes in the presidential election states “a balanced approach to the issue of teaching history in Moldova through the perspective of science and pluralism of opinion, expressed through the perspective of cultural diversity and social integration and the exclusion of political interference”.
