The Moldovan delegation headed by Prime Minister Vlad Filat had meetings with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, UNDP administrator and UN Deputy Secretary General Helen Clark and representatives of the Moldovan community in New York, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Government.
In the meeting with Ban Ki-Moon, Vlad Filat said Moldova supports the UN Secretary General's initiatives aimed at increasing the organization's role in dealing with the challenges to peace and international security, the economic, financial and food crises. According to him, the conference to asses the implementation of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons that will take place in May this year will constitute a new step towards achieving the UN objectives in the field.
Discussing with Helen Clark, Vlad Filat said Moldova needs the UNDP's support, especially in the area of public administration. For her part, the UNDP administrator praised Moldova for managing to negotiate the agreement with the IMF and to stabilize the budgetary situation. She said the UNDP is ready to provide assistance to Moldova in public administration and in combating the negative effects of climate change. The UNDP will also help Moldova prepare for the donors' meeting set to take place in Brussels in March.
During the meetings with representatives of the Moldovan community in the U.S., Vlad Filat spoke about the social, economic and political situation in Moldova and about the government's priorities. He said the Moldovan citizens settled abroad contribute directly to the promotion of Moldova's image.
Members and founders of the Association “Moldova for Democracy and Development” that was established in 2008 to inform the Moldovans living in New York about the situation and events in Moldova, stressed the necessity of building contacts between the Moldovan citizens and Moldova's embassies abroad so as to implement join measures with the help of the Government. They said they are ready to launch a number of projects to exchange experience with the Moldovan young people.
The Moldovan governmental delegation is paying an official visit to New York between January 19 and 23.
