The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Moldova (HCHRM) is worried about the actions of the regime from Tiraspol. It uses again the strategy of 1990-92 when it liquidated and arrested “young republicans”, persons from the opposition, destroyed NGOs and other associations of the region’s civil society accusing them of terrorism. HCHRM made these declarations in a press release related to the arrest on August 17 of Ghenadie Taran, the leader of “Dignitas” public association from Slobozia. According to the same source “without presenting any orders of the prosecutors or a decision of the court, a group of persons, which said they are employees of the criminal militia broke in the house of Taran, searched it and sequestered documents about the activity of “Dignitas”, at the same time arresting Taran”. HCHRM mentions that by 24:00 o’clock on August 17, he was still detained, and starting August 18, the home telephone was blocked. The Helsinki Committee announces that it will monitor the situation and will inform national and international bodies about the evolution of the events, both regarding arrest of Ghenadie Taran and explosions in Tiraspol. At the same time HCHRM asks the specialized bodies of Moldova and OSCE to actively involve in investigating explosions, in order to exclude the possibility to use them for political means.
