Two families of seniors from the Orhei district will receive firewood and food worth over 4000 lei, from HelpAge Internatonal in Moldova. The money used for this donation was alloted to the organization according to the law that allows taxpaying individuals, to redirect 2% of their income taxes towards civil society or religious organizations, IPN reports.

According to Project Coordinator Victoria Virschi, the beneficiaries were identified by the members of “Scânteia”, an NGO from the Donici commune of the Orhei disctrict, with the help of local authorities. The aid amounts to four cubic meters of firewood for each family and a set of food products. These will be delivered to the beneficiaries on Thursday, December 21.

One of the beneficiaries is raising five grandchildren on her own, whose parents left without a trace for some time now. She can’t afford firewood, and the cold season is a great problem. The lady receives retirement pay and social help that amount to little over 1500 lei.

The second beneficiary doesn’t have children and is bedridden. She lives with her elderly sister, who has two children. One of the boys, who disappeared several years ago, left behind a bedridden child. The second child is employed, for a salary of 500 lei. All four of them live in the same house.

Local authorities have assumed the responsibility to transport the firewood to these two households.

HelpAge International promotes project that support and protect elderly people from discrimination. The project on “Observing Fundamental Rights for Elderly Women in Moldova” strives to eliminate and fight violence towards elderly women.

As of 1 January 2017, individual taxpayers can direct two percent of the income taxes they have paid in the previous year to a non-commercial or religious organization of their choice.
