Heavy rain leaves 5 suburban households mired in mud

At least five households in Chisinau's suburban town of Durlesti were invaded by mud and a number of streets in the city were inaccessible on Monday morning in the wake of heavy rainfall overnight, according to information presented at the ordinary City Hall's meeting today, Info-Prim Neo reports. Buiucani district head Valeriu Nemerenco said the families affected in Durlesti would receive aid. He blamed unauthorized private constructions, which obstructed normal water drainage, for the havoc. Petru Gontea, the head of the department responsible for public amenities, said that in the last few days there were a number of complaints from residents notifying the municipal authorities of leaks in the roofing of apartment buildings. But the problems seem to have been already solved, without municipal intervention. To prevent flooding caused by rains, the municipality plans by September to revamp the drainage channel along Cetatea Alba Street and remove silt from the river Durlesti. Weathermen have forecast rains throughout this week, warning that water could rise to hazardous levels in small and shallow rivers.
