The drivers who will not give way to pedestrians and bicyclists who cross the street legally will face fines that will be four times larger than the current ones. When the first such infringement is committed, the punishment will be 600 to 1,200 lei and three penalty points. When other such violations are committed in the course of a calendar year, the punishment will be 2,000 to 3,000 lei and six penalty points. This is provided in a bill registered in Parliament by a group of MPs of the European People’s Group, IPN reports.

The bill authors suggest penalties for using mobile phones or similar devices not only for drivers of motor vehicles or motorcycles, but also for cyclists and persons who drive vehicles pulled by animals, except for telephone calls made through hands-free kits or to emergency services. The fines will oscillate between 150 and 3,000 lei.

According to the National Patrolling Inspectorate, the over 2,500 road accidents that occurred in 2017 claimed 273 lives and injured over 2,800 persons. Among the main causes of accidents were speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, non-giving of way to other motor vehicles and to pedestrians.
