Heated discussions were held following the Constitutional Court’s approval of the bill to amend Article 13 of the Constitution so as to substitute the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language”. Some say attempts are made to steal the identity of Moldovans, while others consider the Romanian language is part of the identity of the population that lives in the Republic of Moldova. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.
Chairman of the public association “Voievod” Nicolae Pascaru said that if a referendum on the phrase “Moldovan language” or “Romanian language” was held, the people would chose the Moldovan language and this thing is proven by the polls of the past ten years. “This is normal because the people respect themselves and have dignity and feel like a nation,” stated Nicolae Pascaru. According to him, the country’s citizens are Moldovans and they have the right to the Moldovan language.
Socialist MP Grigore Novac said they try to steal the identity of Moldovans. Given that some of the members of the Constitutional Court swore to be faithful to the neighboring state, it is evident that they could not have passed another judgment. “Attention is being distracted from other problems. The PLDM solved all the problems in this country already or they are better historians and linguists than the experts and have to do their job,” stated the MP.
Chairwoman of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko said the problem of language is a very serious one in the Republic of Moldova. The people are now better prepared to give an identity to the population and the state that starts with the Romanian language too because it is also about the linguistic identity.
Historian Virgil Paslariuc said a language is different from other languages by two main criteria – literary standard and the differences between an idiom and another. “From scientific viewpoint, things are very clear. Two interpretations cannot exist here. From scientific view, this idiom is called the Romanian language. In the Danube area, they spoke the Romanic language that is based on the Latin language,” stated the historian.
The Constitutional Court on October 31 endorsed the bill to amend Article 13 of the Constitution, by which the phrase “Moldovan language” is replaced with “Romanian language” following a request made by a group of MPs constituted on the initiative of the Liberal-Democratic MPs.
