The Socialist councilors of Chisinau who initiated the referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor general consider this is possibility offered to the residents of Chisinau, while the Liberal councilors believe this will fail. The issue was discussed in the program “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.

Socialist councilor Victor Poleakov said the referendum is not a political game as it is speculated in the public sphere, but is a democratic possibility to enable the inhabitants of the municipality to state their view about the way the mayor governs. “The referendum results from the problems existing in the municipality of Chisinau,” stated the councilor.

Liberal councilor Ion Cebanu said the Socialists have no chance as regards the holding of a referendum. “It is the third or the fourth attempt to hold a referendum. They have had no other project for the municipality. They tried in elections to win the seat of mayor, but failed and now try to enter the City Hall through the window given that they didn’t manage to enter through the front door,” he stated.

“Our Party” councilor Ilian Casu said the referendum is indeed a democratic exercise, but this should be contrasted with the political realities in the Republic of Moldova. “We live in a captured state and I think it is illogical to speak about the democratic result of this exercise,” he noted.

Unaffiliated councilor Ion Stefanita said Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca failed to ensure labor division in the subordinated units and this was his problem. “He tolerated all kinds of functionaries who counted the money, but didn’t propose urbanistic plans to develop the city,” he stated.

On September 12, the Chisinau Municipal Council set the date of the local referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca from the post of mayor general of Chisinau. The inhabitants of Chisinau and its suburbs are expected to cast their votes in the plebiscite on November 19. The decision was taken by the votes of 26 councilors of the total of 51. Dorin Chirtoaca is the first deputy chairman of the Liberal Party. He is investigated for passive corruption and influence peddling. He pleads not guilty.

The collection of signatures for the referendum on the dismissal of Dorin Chirtoaca was initiated by the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova.
