The hearing in the second case featuring ex-Premier Vlad Filat that was scheduled for May 2 was postponed. The court informed the former Prime Minister’s lawyers that it will set the date of the new hearing and that Filat will not be escorted to the court of law on May 2.
Asked by IPN to comment, lawyer Victor Munteanu said the defense’s appeal against the decision to reject the application addressed to the Constitutional Court hasn’t been yet examined by the Chisinau City Appeals Court and, consequently, the case wasn’t sent back to the Buiucani branch of the Chisinau City Court. The appeal was filed after the ordinary court two weeks ago rejected the lawyers’ application concerning the raising of the exception of unconstitutionality of a number of provisions of the Penal Procedure Code.
In the second case, Vlad Filat is charged with money laundering in considerable amounts. The former Premier pleads not guilty. Vlad Filat was arrested in October 2015 and on June 27, 2016 was sentenced to nine years in jail for passive corruption and influence peddling. He serves his sentence in Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau.
