The reform agenda in healthcare and the Government’s accomplishments in the field were the main subjects discussed in the meeting of Prime Minister Pavel Filip and World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab, IPN has learned from the executive’s press service.

Pavel Filip thanked the WHO for the assistance provided to Moldova in working out strategic documents for modernizing the health sector, in the process of adjusting the pharmaceutical legislation to the European standards and in ensuring high-quality medical services for the people.

For her part, Zsuzsanna Jakab appreciated the progress made by Moldova in immunizing the population, reducing maternal and infant mortality and combating smoking, noting that it can serve as an example for other states in this regard.

“Moldova is a small country and can easier cope with challenges. You can count on the support of the WHO in ensuring the sustainable development of healthcare and in implementing the reforms needed to guarantee the viability and quality of medicine,” stated Zsuzsanna Jakab.

The officials also discussed the fight against alcohol abuse and obesity and implementation of the legislation that bans smoking in public places.

The Republic of Moldova became a member of the WHO on May 4, 1992.
