Professor Ion Iliciuc advised Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi to quit. “In a civilized state, when healthy children die, the minister of health and the deputy minister on pediatric matters are the first to resign,” Ion Iliciuc said in a news conference on Wednesday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
According to the professor, the death rate among newborns is about 12 children per 1 000 newborns. There were cases when perfectly healthy children died because of fever or angina at an age when they were outside danger. “We cannot find cheap preparations for combating convulsions caused by fever in our country. They are not expensive, but the companies do not import them because they need thousands of euros to register them and thus do not make profit,” stated Ion Iliciuc.
He also said that the doctors should supervise the children in risky situations, who represent 70% of the newborns. “The children of the risk group include the children born prematurely or to mothers who suffered from anemia during pregnancy or have dermatitis and allergies. These children must be prepared before vaccination or treatment,” stated the professor, adding that the doctors are to blame when children die or become invalids as a result of a treatment.
Ion Iliciuc said that the health system in Moldova is sick and corrupt. “It must be urgently treated. The Ministry of Health does not have a clear strategy for preparing medical staff. Not all those who want can become doctors. We do not need medicine studied by contract,” he stressed. He also said that the Ministry does not effectively control the finances and the quality of the medical services provided.
“The Ministry of Health does not have a functional system of obligations and responsibilities. That’s why the irresponsibility, protectionism, nepotism and corruption affected the health system like the cancer. Only a radical operation can improve the situation,” said the professor.
Ion Iliciuc is a specialist in pediatric neurology. Until last October, he managed the Mother and Child Center.
