UNICEF purchased cold chain equipment necessary for sustaining the quality and safety of vaccines for health facilities in the Transnistrian region within the project “Strengthening the perinatal system and immunization chain in the Transnistrian region”, which is funded by the European Union and Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (SDC) and UNDP, IPN reports.
Angela Capcelea, UNICEF Moldova Health Officer, said the project works to improve access of all women and children to quality immunization services. The new equipment will ensure proper storage and transportation of vaccines in all health facilities. As a result, children will benefit from improved immunization program.
Within the project, a cold storage room for keeping the vaccines in a centralized way has been set up. Also, 70 refrigerators have been purchased for all the maternities and primary health care units, as well as carriers for vaccine transportation and other equipment for rigorous monitoring of temperature in this equipment.
This project is part of broader framework of the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Program, funded by the European Union (€9.5 million), Swiss Development Cooperation Agency (€1.1 million) and UNDP (€1.1 million), and implemented by UNICEF, UNDP, and WHO.
