The head of Ungheni district Iurie Toma is defecting from the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM). In a news conference on April 16, he said he decided to run for the post of mayor of Ungheni town and of district councilor as an independent candidate, IPN reports.

“The decision to leave the PLDM has no connection with the defection of Iurie Leanca and other personalities from the PLDM. It is my own decision that is based on a number of events, processes and negative phenomena that seriously affected the PLDM’s image, including in our district, confused many people and started to erode the yet fragile accomplishments obtained as a result of so much work and effort. I do not want to associate myself with political rascals and persons who entered politics by accident or were pushed into politics, with profiteers, traitors and political migrants and with those for whom the people are only a critical mass for obtaining advantages and profit,” said Iurie Toma.

He noted that he decided to run for the post of mayor of Ungheni town and of district councilor in order to continue the initiated projects. He announced he will make his electoral program public in the nearest future and tomorrow will enter the election campaign.

Iurie Toma was named head of the PLDM local organization in Ungheni in 2009, while in 2011 he became the head of Ungheni district. He was dismissed from the post of head of the local organization on March 14 this year.
