President Nicolae Timofti summed up his successes and failures during three years of tenure in a special edition of the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
Among the main accomplishments, Nicolae Timofti mentioned the signing and ratification of the Association Agreement with the EU and the abolition of the visa regimes with the EU member states. The main failure for the head of state is the fact that the living standards of the population weren’t improved. “I admit that we didn’t manage to improve the living standards and this is regrettable. But the programs are not always fully carried out and the politicians not always correctly calculate the implementation terms. I don’t think there are politicians who do not want to do good things for those who have voted them. I think we have all the chances to succeed. When the Association Agreement is implemented, the economy will grow and the salaries and pensions, which are our main concern, will be raised,” said the head of state.
He also said that he banks on the European partners’ support. “I think we will manage to achieve our objectives in cooperation with our European partners within the Association Agreement with the EU as there are conditions that oblige us to do this and this will motivate us. A lot of work is yet to be done in the justice sector and in fighting corruption. The Europeans follow everything very attentively and will not forgive us. They already cut the subsidies for the justice reform by over €1 million because we didn’t do certain reforms in this field on time,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
He noted that his key objectives for the last year of tenure include the continuation of the European course and the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU as well as of reforms.
Asked if he will accept to hold again the post of head of state in a year, Nicolae Timofti said he wants first to complete his duties during his first term in office and will then take a decision, if necessary.
