The Cahul Court ordered to place the head of Cahul district, who is accused of involvement in rigging of tender contests, under house arrest for a 30-day period, IPN reports.
On Wednesday, MPs, mayors, district councilors and locals representing the Party of Socialists mounted a protest next to the Cahul Court in connection with the arrest of the district’s head, Socialist Marcel Cenușă. According to them, the arrest is illegal, while the ruling party aims to subjugate the independent local public authorities using methods dating from the time of Plahotniuc and remove all those who think in a different way or are inconvenient for the current government.
The head of Cahul district and another eight persons, among who are employees of the District Council, a mayor and businessmen, were arrested on charges of passive corruption, active corruption and abuse of office. These are suspected of causing over 1 million lei damage to the district budget as a result of rigged procurement procedures.
The mayor of Moscovei commune of Cahul district and the manager of a fictional company were placed under judicial control for a month, while one of the functionaries of the Cahu District Council’s Construction Division was set free. The manager of another company featured in this case was placed under house arrest for 30 days.
