Eduard Harunjen has published a letter addressed to President Igor Dodon showing that there are more whys behind his resignation as Prosecutor General than the health reasons cited in his formal notice.
“I hope this will put an end to the ferocious assaults against the Prosecutor General’s Office, and that the prosecutors will be left alone to do their jobs, so that they can bring their cases to successful completion, including the high-profile ones that involve politicians.
“I also hope that my decision can put an end to the moves against the independence of the Prosecutor General’s Office, to this attempt of bringing the law enforcement under political control,” reads Harunjen’s letter, which was posted on the PGO’s official website.
“Over the last few months the PGO has experienced attacks unprecedented in twenty-eight years since Independence, obviously orchestrated in concert by narrow groups and politicians scared of an independent and professional prosecution system”, says the former PG.
According to Harunjen, the resignation also had the role of preventing “the legal risks associated with Tuesday’s Parliament decision”, which could otherwise have “created the most dangerous precedent in the history of PGO, where any group of politicians would be able to dismiss or undo the work of the Prosecutor General according to their narrow interests.” Harunjen went on to accuse the current government of seeking to replace the PG with the purpose of terminating some high-profile investigations.
Igor Dodon has announced he formally accepted the resignation.
