The sentence given to a man who over a year ago caused a road accident that resulted in the death of a young woman was made harsher. The prosecutors challenged the sentence and the Chisinau City Appeals Court ruled that the man will serve five years in jail, not three as the ordinary court decided, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said the man was also banned from driving and was obliged to pay 700,000 lei damages to the successor of the victim and the injured party.
The tragedy happened on the night of May 28, 2019. The man was driving a “Suzuki” car, heading to Maximovca from Mereni. He violated the traffic rules and, changing lanes, collided head-on with a car in which the 26-year-old woman was travelling as a passenger. The woman died on the spot, while the driver was hospitalized in a serious state.
The alcotest showed the man was in an advanced state of initiation when the accident occurred, having a concentration of 1.43 g/l of alcohol in the blood.
This summer, the Anenii Noi Court has sentenced the man to three years behind bars. The Chisinau City Appeals Court pronounced a harsher sentence. The decision is executory, but can be appealed to the Supreme Court of justice.
