The driver who violently hit a carriage with a baby by his car in Stefan Voda last summer got a harsher penalty. Initially, the Ștefan Voda branch of the Court of Causeni sentenced him to four years in jail. After the prosecution challenged the sentence, the Appeals Court passed a new judgment by which the 20-year-old driver was sentenced to five years and six months behind bars, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in the evening of August 20 last year, the culprit, being under the influence of alcohol and without having a driver’s license, travelled by his car on the central street of Brezoaia village. At a certain moment, he lost control of the vehicle and, moving to the contraflow lane, struck a carriage with a baby that was on the roadside. It happened before the eyes of the child’s mother, who was talking with a woman near the gate of her house. The four-month-old baby died on the way to the hospital.

Immediately after the impact, the driver left the place of the accident, leaving the car on the street. He went to his home in the same village. He was shortly arrested. The alcotest showed this had an alcohol concentration of 1.12 mg/l in the exhaled air. The culprit admitted his guilt.

The Appeals Court’s judgment can be disputed in the Supreme Court of Justice.
