The Cabinet endorsed harsher penalties for the members of electoral offices of polling stations, who will unjustifiably avoid offering ballots to voters. Until now the fines ranged from 300 to 600 lei, but after the amendment of the Contravention Code, they will be between 2,800 and 5,000 lei, IPN reports.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said harshening the penalty for not providing the ballot paper to the person registered on the electoral register or for handing over a number of ballots to one voter is necessary to guarantee the unimpeded exercise of the fundamental rights to vote and to stand for election

The amendments to the Contravention Code are to be examined and adopted by Parliament.
