The penalties for political and electoral corruption will be harsher. The MPs adopted a bill that regulates such aspects as abusive use of administrative resources in election campaigns, organized transportation of voters to polling places and involvement of noncommercial organizations in election campaigns, IPN reports.

Among the amendments made to the Penal Code is the harsher penalty for hampering the free exercise of the electoral right. The Penal Code was also supplemented with an article that refers to illegal financing of political parties, election contenders, initiative groups or election campaigns.

The Contravention Code was also amended and now stipulates that the transportation of voters to the polling station on election day will be punished with a fine of 3,000 to 6,000 lei for private individuals and of 9,000 to 15,000 lei for legal entities. The use of hate speech and instigation of discrimination will also be punished with a fine.

The election contenders will not have the right to launch or to take part in the launch of infrastructure projects or public budget procurement procedures. Otherwise, the Central Election Commission will adopt a decision to strip the parties of the right to receive state budget allocations for a period of six months to a year.
