Persons who drive under the influence of alcohol and cause road accidents and also hit-and-run drivers will be punished harsher. Under a bill proposed to Parliament, these persons will no longer benefit from milder punishment in the form of freeing from liability or from criminal punishment. If they accept blame, they will benefit only from the reduction of the limits of the maximum penalty stipulated by law, IPN reports.

Also, the jail term for inebriated drivers who cause accidents that result in serious bodily injuries or death will be increased to 15 years. The persons who will commit a road accident while under the influence of alcohol and will leave the place of the accident, while not having a driver’s license or after having been banned from driving will be punished with three to seven years in jail.

The bill to amend the Criminal Code was proposed by a group of MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity. According to them, the goal of the initiative is to establish a mechanism for combating DUI driving.

The bill sponsors also suggest supplementing the Contravention Code with a provision saying that the persons caught driving under the influence of alcohol for two or more times during the same year will be deprived of the right to pay half of the fine.

According to statistics, the 229 road accidents caused by inebriated drivers in 2022 resulted in 24 deaths and 143 persons hurt.

The bill is to be examined and adopted by Parliament.
