The campaign to sterilize stray dogs in Chisinau has begun. Although, on July 15, the City Hall announced sterilizing the dogs would last till later in September, the NGO members and the vets involved in the campaign accuse a series of obstacles not allowing for observing the previously agreed terms, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the chief Chisinau veterinary, Radu Mudreac, the dogs need first to be vaccinated against rabies in order to be sterilized. Or, the pre-vaccination and post-vaccination procedure lasts about 21 days. During a month, the animal has to stay in a special place, under supervision. This entails additional expenses and delays the campaign. The municipal specialized services do not have the necessary room to host the dogs. Under these circumstances, the campaign will last till the end of the year.
The vagrant dogs are to be sterilized in the quarters of animal-protecting foundations in Chisinau. Autosalubritate – the waste evacuating municipal enterprise – will catch and carry them there. 5 days after sterilization, the dogs will be released in the areas where they were found, not to allow the place to be occupied by other packs. Each dogs will bear a distinctive mark showing it was sterilized.
First they will catch the dogs in the areas where there were complaints. According to vice mayor Nestor Grozavu, the City Hall should issue a decision obliging all the people to sterilize their own dogs, by signing a contract with the local administration. The decision should envisage the construction companies of the entities around which dogs gather to live.
Sterilizing a dog costs some 300 lei. The municipality is willing to allocate 7 million lei in this regard. “We have no illusions that the issue may be solved immediately and fully. For now, we want to solve the problem in places where people can't bear the presence of dogs,” Nestor Grozavu said.
There are some 30,000 stray dogs in Chisinau City.
