About half of the population of Moldova does not have access to qualitative water, while half of existent aqueducts do not work. This thing was noted by the chairman of Chisinau Territorial Organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova (OTC MEM), Vladimir Garaba. According to him, water supply situation of population of Moldova is precarious, and in certain localities event catastrophic. Recently the situation of water supply systems improved, especially in localities benefiting from foreign technical-financial assistance. Therefore, in 2005, there were made repairing and construction works of water supply and sewerage systems, wells and springs of about 121,5 million lei, 24 million of them were provided by the World Bank, about 11 millions – by the Danish Government and other 5 millions – by the Social Investment Fund. In this sense, only 19,4 million lei were allocated from the state budget. According to him, the verifications made in 2005 in 282 localities, showed that at the moment only 84 water cleaning stations are functioning, only 5 of them work according to standards. Other 59, including the one from the capital, treat insufficiently the residual waters. In the same time, 3 stations receive and evacuate waters without cleaning them. 53% of the laboratory samples of water from the delivery systems do not correspond to sanitary-chemical norms. The gravest situation is registered in Calarasi, Glodeni, Basarabeasca, Taraclia, Ciadar-Lunga, Comrat, Hancesti, Anenii-Noi, Sangerei, mun. Balti. Specialists noted that degradation of water quality is due to sanitary-technical situation of aqueducts. This year, for renovating the aqueducts of RM, the Arab Fund for Development of Kuwait provided a credit of 7,38 million lei, World Bank –1 million lei, and Cooperation and Development Department of Government of Switzerland – 1,5 million lei.
