The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) needs a broad reform and this reform is under way, Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin said in an interview for the paper “Ziarul de Garda”, quoted by IPN.

“There are many things to be changed inside the PGO, starting with the mentality and ending with the fight against corruption. There are also other negative aspects, but we avoid discussing them” said Corneliu Gurin.

According to him, changes are first of all needed at organizational level and steps started already to be taken in this respect. But modifications are also required in the work of the prosecutors and in their work conditions. “I refer to the status of prosecutors, which says that they must enjoy procedural independence and administrative stability. The work conditions should be improved. The PGO’s office hasn’t been renovated since it was erected. Our main objectives are to increase the efficiency and to restore the people’s confidence in the prosecution service,” said Gurin.

In this connection, he reminded that a working group was recently created by a joint order of the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Justice to ensure the implementation of the reform measures. The group will work out legislative amendments concerning general and specific aspects of the PGO’s work. It consists of representatives of the PGO and the Ministry of Justice and of civil society experts and EU high-ranking advisers. There were also invited representatives of international organizations and embassies.

“I want to say that even if not much time passed and no money was allocated for the purpose, the working group works with abnegation, devotion and a high dose of enthusiasm. We will soon see the first results, presented transparently, as we wanted from the very beginning,” said Corneliu Gurin.
