After a pause of several dozen years, the bridge between the villages Gura Bicului and Bychok of Anenii Noi district became functional on November 18. The bridge was destroyed as a result of bombardment during the war of 1992. It was reconstructed in 2002 with European funds, but could not be put into operation owing to technical faults, IPN reports.
In the bridge opening ceremony, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said this act is a new stage in achieving the objective of eliminating the barriers to the free movement of people, goods and services between the two banks of the Nistru River. The ensuring of the functionality of the bridge is important not only for consolidating the transit and economic potential of the region, but also for developing infrastructure, commercial and private road transport.
The repair works cost almost 30 million lei. The bridge ensures the shortest distance between Chisinau and Tiraspol. It forms part of the international road M-14 that connects Chisinau and Odessa and the European corridor No. 9 that joins the Balkan countries with Odessa, Kiev and other important destinations.
Earlier this month, the chief negotiators of Chisinau and Tiraspol to the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format signed a protocol decision on the removal of the technical faults and reopening of the bridge at the end of November.
