Representatives of a number of nongovernmental and volunteer organizations disguised themselves as Grim Reapers and went out to urge the pedestrians to cross the street legally and the drivers to be cautious. The drive was titled “I expect you at the red traffic lights”, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This drive is aimed at making the pedestrians and drivers more attentive so that they do not risk their lives when crossing the street. It is also intended for the traffic police that do not do their job,” said Antonita Fonari, head of the Resource Center “Young and Free”. According to Antonita Fonari, the police officers do not stay at crosswalks to warn the people against crossing the street at the red traffic lights and to penalize the taxi drivers who park the cars on crosswalks. The state should invest in the eduction of the pedestrians and drivers. More fines should be imposed so that the traffic rules are respected, Antonita Fonari added. “We accepted Antonita Fonari's proposal to warn the pedestrians and drivers about the necessity of obeying traffic rules. They must realize that they will live longer if they do so,” said stage manager Mihai Fusu, volunteer taking part in the drive. Sorin Mereacre, head of the East Europe Foundation, said this campaign is aimed at reducing the number of road accents involving pedestrians. The drive “I expect you at the red traffic lights” forms part of the National Volunteer Week. A similar campaign was carried out two years ago, when national stars and journalists dressed themselves in white and black clothes in order to highlight the importance of using crosswalks.
