The Green Ecologist Party called on the Government to abrogate the regulations concerning the renting of forests so as to prevent functionaries from building luxury villas on state-owned land.

The party’s head Anatolie Prohnitski said the camouflaged privatization and degrading of the forest stock of Moldova were discussed in a meeting of the Security Council and at the Government, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the party, the party’s members had a meeting with residents of Sociteni village of Ialoveni district, who remained without forest last spring. The forest was leased out by the Forestry Agency “Moldsilva” and the current owners intend to erect large constructions there.

The head of the NGO “Ave Natura” Andrei Dumbraveanu said there were leased out 12,000 hectares of forest and about 200 Moldovan villages remained without a forest stock.

A call to save the national forest stock was transmitted to the Government on February 3. It was signed by about 60 scientists and representatives of civil society. The collection of signatures goes on online, trough the website http://www.petitieonline.net/petitie/09852156.
