Greens and Social Action Bloc to back joint candidate in Chisinau elections

The Ecologist Party “Alianta Verde” (PEAVM) and the Social Action Bloc (BAS) from the Chisinau Municipal Council supports the idea of a single candidate for the office of general interim mayor of Chisinau for the local elections. The leaders of the two parties told a news conference on March 23 that they are waiting proposals for creating an electoral bloc which would strengthen the democrat forces and would run for elections with competent, honest persons and who have “clean” biographies, Info-Prim Neo reports. Chairman of PEAVM Andrei Dumbraveanu said his party chooses to ally in elections. To date, several councillors of BAS gave their consent. The party expects other democrat parties to join the alliance if they realize that they have chances to win only in such a way. BAS Councillor Ion Mamaliga said that Chisinau was not officially won by communists so far, and in case this situation occurs this year, the destiny of the 2009 parliamentary elections would be decided. Mamaliga says that this issue was discussed with the leaders of several parties over the last 2 months, who have subsequently announced their participation in elections, saying they want to test the popularity of the party. BAS Councillor, economist Mihai Roscovan says that the separate participation in the 1999 and 2005 elections offered the votes to the communists, directly contributing to the maintenance of the PCRM’s government. According to the cited source, each party should appeal to polls in order to evaluate their chances to win because the policy of the local public administration depends on the political composition of the Chisinau Municipal Council. Roscovan did not exclude the possibility to run for mayor, although the alliance has several proposals in this respect. At the same time, the speakers mentioned at the conference that in case the unification appeal will not be accepted by other parties the new alliance will participate in elections by itself.
