The grape harvest this year is projected to be by 15% lower. At the beginning of spring, the harvest was estimated at approximately 260,000 tonnes of technical grapes. But owing to the severe drought witnessed in August and the lack of precipitation, the forecasts were reduced to about 230,000 tonnes, secretary of state of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Andrian Digolean stated in a program on Radio Moldova station, IPN reports.

The figure is approximate. The exact quantity of gathered grapes will be known after the producers report the harvested volumes, after January 15, 2024. The production will be lower, but the quality of grapes is better and the wine will be therefore good, noted Andrian Digolean.

The grape harvest globally is also lower, primarily in the southern hemisphere and in some of the large European wine making countries. The International Organization of Vine and Wine said the global wine production in 2023 is expected to be of over 24 million liters on average, a decline of 7% compared to the volume of 2022 and to the lowest level recorded in 1961.
