Alexandr Stoianoglo thinks the draft amendment that aims to remove the Prosecutor General and Gagauzia’s Chief Prosecutor from the Superior Council of Prosecutors is designed to subdue it politically.

“What is being done is totally unlawful. Politicians have no right to interfere. So the Prosecutor General remains on the Superior Council of Magistrates, but is removed from the Superior Council of Prosecutors? Where is the logic of it? Anywhere in the world, the prosecutor general is part of the Superior Council of Prosecutors. Moreover, per the Constitution, prosecutors must constitute a majority on the SCP. And the proposal to remove the Prosecutor General and Gagauzia’s Chief Prosecutor has been made exactly for the purpose of diminishing the number of prosecutors on the SCP”, said Alexandr Stoianoglo.

At the end of last week, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced it formally asked relevant international organizations to analyze the extent to which a set of proposed amendments, which refer to disciplinary proceedings and evaluation of the Prosecutor General, as well as changes to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, meet international standards.

According to the PGO, “the bill approved in the first reading was drafted in a haste that has no justification, creating the perception that the aim is to establish political control over the prosecution system and that the real stake behind promoting the evaluation mechanism is to dismiss the incumbent Prosecutor General”.
