The public movement “United Gagauzia” made a call to the Governor of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Mihail Formuzal, asking him to initiate a local referendum on the foreign policy vector of Moldova. The information was communicated to IPN by the organization’s press service.

The public movement said the inhabitants of the region should be allowed to state their opinion on Moldova’s prospects of joining the European Union and the Customs Union. The referendum should be held on December 22, 2013, when most of the persons working abroad come home for the winter holidays.

It should be noted that Mihail Formuzal headed the “United Gagauzia” movement in 2004-2006, while in the elections of 2006 - 2010 he was the movement’s official candidate for the post of Governor of Gagauzia.

Under Point 9, Article 68 of the Code (Constitution) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, the Governor has the right to initiate a local referendum. But the subject of the referendum can arouse questions as the country’s foreign policy is a prerogative of the central authorities of Moldova.
