The government has assumed today, November 6, the responsibility for amending the Law on the Prosecutor's Office, so that the prime minister will be responsible for pre-selecting the candidates for the General Prosecutor's Office.
Prime Minister Maia Sandu said that the changes made in September this year did not generate the expected results of choosing an honest and courageous prosecutor. Although the Ministry of Justice created a special commission for the preselection of a short list of candidates to the position of General Prosecutor, which subsequently would be presented to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, this task could not be fulfilled because the members of the commission did not have access to sufficient data that would confirm the integrity and professionalism of the candidates.
The Minister of Justice, Olesea Stamati, said that the lack of sufficient data vitiated the contest. Additionally, it was found that one out of six commission members clearly favored certain candidates, giving a discrepant score compared to other members of the commission. "Given the importance of choosing a General Prosecutor with high professional qualities and integrity, we put forward the initiative to amend the Law on the Prosecutor's Office, so that the government can take responsibility for the process", said Olesea Stamati.
"Depending on training and skills, integrity and other personal qualities, the prime minister selects, according to the approved procedure, at least two candidates for the position of General Prosecutor and puts forward their candidacies to the CSP. Additionally, we highlight the obligation of all state institutions to provide information to those who pre-select candidates for such important positions in the state", said Olesea Stamati.
