President Vladimir Voronin instructed the Government to work out and implement an action plan of institutional and legal nature in order to speed up reforms in the inspection system. According to the presidential press service, during a meeting held Wednesday, Vladimir Voronin highlighted the importance of re-evaluating and reorganising the 61 governmental institutions dealing with inspection and surveillance in order to either liquidate or restructure them, including by merger, depending on their importance. In addition, the head of state suggested putting in place a mechanism to constantly monitor the activity of the inspection and surveillance authorities. The President remarked that the host of cases where inspectors committed abuses and illegalities prove the inefficiency of the existing inspection system, which leaves room for corruption. On October 24 the Government decided to axe 10 percent of the jobs in 7 institutions with inspection powers.
