This week the government decided to institute the publishing house “Enciclopedia Moldovei” (“Encyclopaedia of Moldova”). Authorities plan to publish 10 volumes of Moldovan encyclopaedias with a total number of 25,000 copies during 2008-2020 years. The last volume, named “The Republic of Moldova” will be published in English with a total number of 5,000 copies. The informative note attached to the draft decision mentioned that the last volume of the Moldovan Soviet Encyclopaedia was published 26 years ago, and meanwhile, “important developments in the social, economic, political and cultural life, as well as in the mentality, historical evaluation and reconsideration require considerable reflections on the next encyclopaedias to be published, as representing reliable informational sources”. Even though the publication of encyclopaedias over the past 10-15 years is being appreciated, it is considered that they don’t reflect the real phenomena and events that took place in the Moldovan society, says the same source. The encyclopaedia will cover aspects of world cultural history and civilization, the present state of affairs, with a significant heed to literature, arts, religion, philosophy, law, sociology, economy, ethnography, demography, pedagogy, psychology and education. References resources will be written about exact sciences: geography, mathematics, chemistry, geology, biology, zoology, agriculture, medicine etc. Also, there will be published information about Moldovan towns and villages, historical and cultural monuments, articles about politicians and public figures etc. The publishing house will be instituted by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM). For the elaboration of the encyclopaedia different scientific organisations of ASM will be engaged, as well as representatives of higher education institutions, public cultural figures and experts from the central and local authorities.
