The so-called Supreme Soviet of Tiraspol adopted a statement addressed to the central authorities of Russia concerning the recognition of the Transnistrian region as an independent state with its subsequent entry/incorporation into the composition of Russia. The Government said the address is nothing else but direct defiance of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process and of Moldova’s territorial integrity.
According to a statement issued by the Moldovan Government, by such an approach Tiraspol ignores an objective realty, namely the fact that the Transnistrian region is recognized as a component part of Moldova by all the international players taking part in the 5+2 talks. The pseudo-referendum held in Transnistria in September 2006 wasn’t recognized by the international community and cannot be considered an exercise for expressing one’s will. This is a unilateral and definitely counterproductive action.
The political dialogue is the only way for identifying a final and viable solution to the Transnistrian conflict. The Government remains open and interested in such a dialogue and calls on the international partners to make coordinated effort so as to make progress in the settlement process and to work out a special status for the Transnistrian region, based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. The Russian partners are asked to come with a prompt reaction, in full compliance with the norms and principles of international law.
According to the Transnistrian press, the participants in the meeting of the Supreme Soviet where the statement was adopted said that during 24 years the two banks of the Nistru River distanced a lot from each other and the people from the left bank want to have a future together with Russia. A delegation of Tiraspol left immediately for Moscow to transmit the statement to the Kremlin administration.
