The Government approved the legislative proposal to reform the social assistance program put forward by MP Dan Perciun. One of the provisions of this bill allows for increasing the number of families with children that will be included in the social assistance program by raising the minimum guaranteed monthly income for each child, IPN reports.

Minister of Labor and Social Protection Marcel Spatari said that this bill is the first step towards reforming the social assistance program. It provides for the stimulation of the employment of able to work recipients of social assistance by gradually reducing the size of social assistance they receive and by limiting the period of stay in the social assistance program.

The socially deprived families that look after children younger than seven will be entitled to social assistance or to cold-month allowances, up from the children’s age limit of three years earlier. A minimum guaranteed monthly income for children will be set for, separate from the one for adults.

“A number of measures will be taken to reform the social assistance program so as to encourage the beneficiaries to work, mostly those who are unemployed or are day workers. We also aim to increase the number of families with children that benefit from this state support,” said Marcel Spatari.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, 37 322 households or 83 796 persons were recipients of social assistance last December.
